Yachats Homeschooled Group Presents Radio Show

April 6,2005
Newport News Times

Seven youths from the Yachats Homeschool Group will participate in the state Destination Imagination challenge "Live! It's Radio DI!" taking place Saturday on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis.

The group earned the trip to state by placing third in regional competition on March 5.

Destination Imagination is a world-wide program designed for young people to develop creative problem-solving techniques. Participants can range from preschool to college level. Teams of up to seven youths in all 50 states and around the globe participate, with most teams formed in schools or after school programs.

The Yachats homeschoolers were the only homeschool group at the regional conference, where 42 groups were entered in the competition.

The seven Yachats youths, Alexander Rose, Ian Davies, Asher Doyle, Nolan Dean, Katherine Rose and Marisa Dean, have worked since October on an original radio show with a commercial, news flash, sound effects and props. Everything had to be designed and made by the students. Their story, based on a shipwreck on a Polynesian island, contains original songs, native dancing and a lot of laughs. If the students are successful in the state competition, it's on to the world championships.
