I am having my sons do some critical thinking books (from Bright Minds) this summer plus their regular math.

I wanted to share two problems that my 4th grader had. I think it would be kind of fun and maybe sometime Mark could use a critical thinking question for a contest. I only figured out the first one.

Q1: You have 25 coins, which together have a total value of $1.00. What are the coins, and how many of each do you have?

Q2: A farmer buys 100 live animals for $100. How many of each does he buy if chicks are $.10 each, pigs are $2 each, and sheep are $5 each? (Hint: Focus on the number of sheep and start in the middle.)

I didn't figure Q2 out. It stumped me. So, needless to say I looked up the answer. Think outside of the box. That was the problem I had with Q2.

Great questions Bart. Our family each started at the same time trying to figure out the answer. I actually thought my wife would get the answer first, however I beat her to it. My youngest son gave up. My 10 year old is still trying. We'll have to try #2 tomorrow.

Do you think you can post 1 a week?

Here is a new critical thinking problem:

Directions: Use five 2s to make each number listed below. Rules of order apply(e.g., make 506 using five 2s: 22 to the 2nd power + 22 = 506).

________ = 3

________ = 18

_________= 119

_________= 42

_________= 34

_________= 26

_________= 12

_________= 30

These were tough. It took us about an hour to figure out all of them. However, I had to look at the answer for 119. I just couldn't figure it out.

Have fun,
