One of the things we do is something we call "block math". We use those little lego blocks. Each child sits on the floor with a pile of them. Teacher gives them a problem to solve. Simple ones like 2+4, where they will create two stacks - one with two blocks and one with four - and then stack them together and tell the teacher the answer to the problem.
Sometimes we begin with 10 stacks of incremental blocks, from 1 through 10. I will give them a problem like 3+6, and they will have to select the right stacks, put them together and give me the answer.
Sometimes we use it to study one slice of the multiplication table. Start with 10 sets of two-blocks each. Then use it to study multiples of two.
We also use it to do multiplication, which we are learning as "Sets". Three times four is simply three sets of four, or four sets of three. Its interesting with more than one student because they will invariably approach it differently, and you can use that as an opportunity to demonstrate the commutative properties of multiplication in terms they can understand: the two very different stacks give the same result.
In the end, we always move the blocks to the middle of the classroom and try to see how high we can stack them before they fall!
Teacher gets to clean up. Sad
