Another brain teaser from the medium difficulty section:

A barbecue grill holds two steaks at a time. It takes ten minutes to grill one side of a steak. What's the minimum amount of time it would take to grill three steaks on both sides?

Any Guesses?

It would take forty minutes total, if the grill can only hold two steaks at a time. The third steak would have to be grilled by itself.

Nope, it would only take 30 minutes. I've set up this graph to explain

Steak A B C
Side 1 1st 1st 2nd
Side 2 2nd 3rd 3rd

1st - Minutes 1-10
2nd - Minutes 11-20
3rd - Minutes 21-30

I don't think of myself as dumb, but at the risk of that being proven, I don't believe your answer is correct.

Put steaks A & B on the grill -- room for more steaks? Nope, so cook them for 10 minutes.

Elapsed time: 10 minutes

Turn over steaks A & B -- any room yet for another steak? Nope, okay, cook for 10 more minutes.

Elapsed time: 20 minutes

Take steaks A & B off grill and put on steak C, the last steak. Cook for 10 minutes.

Elapsed time: 30 minutes

Turn over steak C and cook for 10 minutes.

Elapsed time: 40 minutes

At what point could I have cut 10 minutes off my grill time?

Thanks.

Jay

Okay, I'm leaving the above for the benefit of anyone else who's thinking that way, but before hitting the post button I thought some more, and grabbed some CDs I could flip over (I work better if I can see real things) and realized why the 30-minute answer is correct and my scenario is wrong.

Basically, you have 6 sides that need to be grilled and can do two sides at a time -- so it should be possible to do all six sides in three, ten-minute sessions. Once you break it down into a "math problem" it's fairly easy to see that it *must* be able to work out that way.

Since there are four in my family I don't ever grill just three steaks, so the problem wasn't really applicable to my life. =;)
